Vancouver was my second Metallica show ever, and the first of the Madly in Anger With the World
Tour, as I’ll be seeing them again in Calgary in May. The sound in GM Place is very good for concerts, and when the
Vancouver fans show up ready to rock you get a very loud experience. Any hockey fan who saw the first game of the playoffs
last year against St. Louis knows exactly what I’m talking about: 17,000 fans singing O Canada and proceeding to get
louder throughout the course of the night.
First Metallica member seen was James; member I saw the most of was Kirk, who must have done
5 or 6 solos right in front of me during the course of the night. Rob was a monster when he hung out in my area too. Lars
was in front of me from about Clover till the end of Battery. Best views of him were during Sad and Creep, during which he
was beating the crap out of the skins and making those typical Lars faces. James was all over the stage during the show, and
he spent a good amount of time on my side of the stage. Really cool moment was when him, Kirk, and Rob were all playing like
10 feet away from me. Sensory overload! LOL
The setlist was very good; I knew going in that I wasn’t going to get The Wait or Dyers
Eve, two tour favourites that I would have loved to hear, because they were played at the last show in Calgary. Still, getting
to hear Bellz, King Nothing (there was a point in the middle where I really thought they were gonna do the Outlaw Torn jam,
something they hadn’t done on this tour yet; sadly it wasn’t to be) Clover, Disappear, and Jump in the Fire was
really cool. About the only lyrical mistake during the show was in Jump, as James kinda flubbed a couple lines. Truth be told
I didn’t even notice it until I listened to the LiveMetallica recording after I got home. I don’t know the lyrics
for that song either, so all’s forgiven.
Moment of the night was, as was the case last year, during the beginning of One. After all the explosions and pyro
and concussions, the lights came on and there's James, like 6 feet away from me doing the intro. Probably cooler than last
year's experience with it, because he was closer and did like the whole song right in my area. Runner-up was when Kirk was
doing the Clover solo right in front of us. It's not the most classic or most wailing of his efforts, but it stuck with me.
Disappear was awesome, I love that intro and getting to hear it in person rocked. Jump in the Fire was an unexpected closer
(well, right until about 9:02 when Mike the awesome security guy showed me the setlist......he later gave it to me after the
show....also, a mad thanks to Kyle the great security guy who gave me the Godsmack setlist).
All in all absolutely no disappointments with this show. It topped the first one in Seattle, and I'm really looking
forward to doing it all again in Calgary on May 6th. See you all there!
